We trust local law enforcement to protect our community
Our local law enforcement officials have served Bonner County with professionalism, compassion, and fairness. We are confident that they don't need the "help" of armed civilians to patrol our communities.
We, the signatories of this letter, implore local law enforcement to reject any such "assistance," and to take a firm legal stance against groups who would unlawfully seek to intimidate our neighbors and visitors.
AN OPEN LETTER REGARDING ARMED PEOPLE GATHERING IN OUR COMMUNITY
We trust that our local law enforcement officials can and will ensure safety in our community.
Dear Chief Coon, Chief Cornelius, Chief McLain, and Sheriff Wheeler,
The whirlwind of uncertainty this year has made it clear that we must commit, more than ever, to trust in the capabilities of our local police and sheriff departments to keep our community safe. While we respect the rights of responsible gun owners, we also trust in the ability of local law enforcement. We know that you and your respective departments can keep law and order, and that there is no need for armed people to gather together on our streets under the guise of protecting our community.
We are concerned about potential future incidents resulting in intimidating, possibly illegal, behavior against citizens and people in our community. We urge you to require prosecution of any individual violating Idaho code sections 18-3303 (Exhibition or use of Deadly Weapon), 18-3304 (Aiming Firearms at Others), 18-7008 (Trespassing), 46-802 (Unorganized Association Prohibited) and 18-711 (Unlawful Exercise of Functions of Peace Officers).
We hope that law enforcement officials in our cities and county will take a stronger legal stance against paramilitary activity given the information provided by the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection. We recommend that you reach out to members of local militia groups, gun clubs, and other organizations and individuals promoting armed presence in our community, and discourage their “assistance” in protecting our community. Given recent experiences in other U.S. cities, their presence may only make things more dangerous and make certain members of our community and visitors feel threatened and intimidated.
We trust that our local law enforcement forces are fully capable of protecting and serving our community without the so-called assistance of unvetted civilians. Allowing armed groups to patrol our streets undermines your respective departments, and poses a real and present danger to our residents, visitors, and our peace officers. We do not need or want armed people gathering in a way that intimidates our community and visitors. With full confidence in you and your officers, we're counting on you to keep us safe. Can we also count on you to reject the "help" of unvetted civilians, and take a stand against armed patrols?
