We would like to remind everyone of the substance of our First Amendment rights. The following is adapted from an ACLU of Idaho statement. For additional information, click on the link below.
“Freedom of speech is a cornerstone of our democracy and is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This freedom is the foundation of a vibrant democracy, and without it, other fundamental rights would wither away. The First Amendment also protects your right to petition the government for redress of grievances, meaning you have the right to ask the government to fix a problem or change a policy. Police and other government officials are allowed to place certain narrow restrictions on the exercise of speech rights. For example, rules of decorum are set by the organizers of public meetings. We strongly encourage everyone to research the rules of decorum for specific public meetings within their city or county.”
“People should not be afraid to publicly criticize laws, the behavior of publicly elected officials, or proposed legislation. People should feel empowered to attend forums, town halls, public hearings, and more without the threat or fear of forcible expulsion for their ideology. Such community gatherings are for the express purpose of integrating public opinion into government workings, and it's important that such meetings be conducted civilly and respectfully by all parties involved. Know your rights when attending public hearings. Don't be afraid to make your voice heard while following processes and procedures of civility & decorum. Know your rights when protesting.”
